PART THIRTHY SIX

PART THIRTHY SIX

A few days went by I kept my cool and my conversations at home to the minimum.

At work my boss offered me to take over our other firm, I was excited and proud that I got offered such a big deal but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to take it so I told him to give me a few days too think about it.

Our other firm is in Johannesburg, that’s a few hours away from home. I would have to stay on my own, I don’t think my parents would be too happy about that.
On the other hand this is my chance to excel and it’s a good way to start.

I went home spoke to my parents about me taking up the offer, my dad said it was up to me he doesn’t want to come in the way of my success but my mum was not too happy with the idea of me going to the city.

She said the city has a very bad reputation, my dad assured my mum that I would be okay, he has family in Jo’burg so I won’t be alone.

I told them to think about it and let me know in the morning if possible or in a day as I told my boss to give me a few days.

Zinat freaked out when I told her, we’ve never been apart besides for when she went on holiday. She also like my mum said Jo’burg is bad for you.

My mum gave me the silent treatment for the evening, I knew she needed time so I didn’t push her. I waited till the morning to hear what she had to say.

When I went downstairs in the morning I saw that my mum was not in the kitchen like she usually was, my brother told me that she was there, she gave them breakfast and went back to her room.

I made breakfast for myself and went up to see if my mum was awake, she was awake but pretended to be asleep. I left her and carried on to work.

I called a few times but she never came to the phone, she made the domestic answer and tell me that she’s not there so I left a message on her cell telling her that she can’t treat me like this, I haven’t even decided yet and this is how she is going on. Imagine when I decide to go.

I really needed to make a decision but everyone I loved made it more difficult. I came home for lunch thinking I could speak to my mum but she saw me and left to I don’t know where.

I got a call from Asad:

Asad: I heard you leaving town.

Me: Not decided as yet. Everyone just making the decision more difficult. My mums not speaking to me and apparently doesn’t want to be around me either.

Asad: Give them some time, it’s a big change for them but make your decision based on what makes you happy.

Me: thanx, wish they all understood especially Zinat she is so mad at me she won’t take my calls.

Asad: I’ll speak to her and then I’ll get her to speak to your parents, maybe they need to see it from another person’s point of view.

Me: I hope you right. Chat later got to get back to work.

On my way to work I saw my mum coming back home, I didn’t bother to stop I made like I didn’t see her. I decided to give her the same treatment.

At supper my mum totally ignored me and so I did the same, my dad was annoyed that the atmosphere at home had become so stressful.

After supper my dad called a meeting in the lounge, he asked my mum why she was not speaking to me and why is she upsetting and punishing me, she didn’t have much to say.

He then asked me what I decided and I told him I couldn’t decide anything because I spent my day thinking why my mum is upset with me and what I can do to make her speak to me.

After listening to what we all had to say including my brothers he told us about what he thought. My dad feels I should take up the offer and he had already arranged a place for me to stay and told his family in Jo’burg that I would be coming.

My mum didn’t seen to happy but she couldn’t refuse my dad and he always has the last say in our house. I called my boss and told him I will take him up on the offer.

Before I knew it my mum was on the phone calling all my family telling them I’m moving to Jo’burg. This was a big deal for everyone. My brothers were happy for me although they were sad that I would be away.

PART THIRHTY FIVE

PART THIRTHY FIVE

After breakfast we all showered and got our things ready for when we leave, my mum helped my Aunty in the kitchen with lunch while some of us cleaned up around the house.

My dad and uncles went to check on things at the hall while some of the guys lazed around.

While in the kitchen my aunt mentions to my mum that one of her friends saw me last night and wanted to bring her son over before we left.

My mum agreed without letting me know so I carried on my day as usual not knowing anything. This Aunty and her family come over just before lunch.

Apparently she was my Aunts best friend which I met before but I couldn’t remember her or her family.

My aunt introduced us to them and everyone went on as normal. I found it strange that this Aunty kept on starring at me, I asked whoever was next to me at that time if they noticed but no one did, Maybe I was just paranoid.

We sat around before lunch making small talk and jokes. Some of the elders went to catch a quick nap before lunch.

My mum and my aunt kept putting me and this aunty’s son together which annoyed me a bit since I didn’t even know him.

Anyways I decided it would be easier for everyone if we packed the bags into the car before lunch so we wouldn’t delay after lunch.

I got all the boys to help me and packed the cars finish, while I was busy with that my mum told my father about this boy. He didn’t say much but he wasn’t too happy, he felt my mum was putting too much pressure on me and too soon.

After lunch we left, on our way we made a stop for a few minutes to grab snacks and were on our way again. We stopped for take out before going home, everyone was nice and hungry.

I unpacked my bags and went on Facebook to check what was happening in the cyber world. A few friends put up statuses about their weekend, some put up pictures, got a bit boring so I went downstairs to see what my family was up too.

My mum already told everyone that was there so now I was the only one who didn’t know. When I got there I heard them talking about the guy but I didn’t know what it was about.

We played a few rounds of carom and watched some tv before everyone went to bed. I still was unaware of my mums tricks.

The next morning at breakfast my mum casually asks what I think about the guy. I was stunned and asked her why the sudden interest in him.

She said she was just asking she had someone in mind for him. I asked who but She didn’t say. I left it at that and went upstairs to get ready for work.

My mum called me while I was at work and she asked if I was free for lunch, she arranged for us a table at the restaurant down the road from my workplace.

I was a bit worried, why did my mum want to meet and like this privately, if it was important she would of told me this morning and if it wasn’t so important she could of waited until I got home.

I just couldn’t figure it out so I waited until I met my mum, I got to the restaurant early and waited for my mum. When She arrived I couldn’t wait and went ahead and asked her what was so important.

Mum: You remember Moomanisaabs friend that came yesterday for lunch, she wanted her son to see you.

Me: for what? Did she tell url before? How can she just come with her son to see me.

Mum: Well we invited her for lunch for that reason.

Me: WHAT! Mum I’m so disappointed at you, I would expect you to ask me before you make plans on choosing a partner for me or is it not my choice I should just shut my mouth and silently marry the guy you choose.

I was upset at the my mum so I didn’t wait until our food came I walked out of the restaurant and drove back to my office.

My mum tried to call me but I didn’t answer. When I got home my dad tried speaking to me but I wasn’t ready to listen to anyone, I went up to my room and didn’t want to hear any explanation or justifications for my mums doing.
At supper I didn’t speak to anyone and was even more annoyed because everyone got to know before me.

After supper I went to Aunty Farida, I didn’t visit since Zinat got back from her honeymoon and Aunty Farida and Uncle Rashid always had a solution to my problems.

I know my mum is looking out for my best interest but She always manages to do it the wrong way and that’s what upsets me.

After I spoke to Aunty Farida and Uncle Rashid I decided to go home and sit down and speak to my mum and dad and solve this problem.

I can’t stand the fact that everyone is pushing me into marriage, it’s like in society if you not married at a certain age there’s something wrong with you.

I got home, spoke to my parents and made it clear when I’m ready I will let them know and that I wanted an answer as to why they were rushing me into marriage.

PART THIRTHY FOUR

PART THIRTHY FOUR

Zinat needed a few things from the mall so I went around with her shopping, we went to my house after the mall, Zinat apologized to my mum and all was good.

Zinat, my cousins from Canada and myself sat and spoke while watching tv. It was a nice relaxing afternoon with great company.

The evening went just as well only a little busier with packing bags and food for the road. We were going to my mamoosaabs ( my mother’s eldest brother) house for a function.

My dad’s family were also invited so we all planned to go. We got to bed early since we had a early morning and a 3 hour long journey.

The next morning we left after Fajr, we were a convoy of five cars, it was fun stopping for breakfast on the road, I always loved traveling, there’s just something about it, the excitement, the fun and good company always makes it more pleasurable.

We finally reached my uncles house, meeting all my uncles and aunts, my cousins, nieces and nephews was so great.

We don’t get to see my mums side of the family very often because we so far apart. Most of my mums family stay in the same area so they get to meet often.
All preparations for the evening function was in full swing. One side we had people washing meat, cutting onions and potatoes, some of the ladies making small flower bouquets for the tables, packing achaar in small bowls, fruit being cut, tea table being set.

It was all work with a lot of laughter and meetings and greetings hugs and kisses, felt very warm and fuzzy being around so much love.

Not that we don’t get much love with my dad’s family but because we were so far from my mums family we never really were aware of any animosity while with my father’s family we were in it all the time.
Lunch was at the hall so everyone even those who didn’t come to the hall to help came for lunch, like one of my cousins says we Indians are first in line when there’s food but never the first to offer help.

I can agree to a point but if you invited doesn’t mean you have to help. Sometimes people got other things to do and make themselves available for your function.

Anyways lunch was scrumptious, deg food is always the best. After lunch we finished up and went to my mamoosaabs house to get dressed for the function.

After Asr was the khatam, then supper after that and then qawali thereafter so we had a busy afternoon and evening.
My mum kept dragging me around to greet people most of which I met two or three years ago and some that I’ve never met before.
All that hugging was giving me a sore neck. I hate when some aunties pull you to hug you.
After the khatam which was at the house everyone went to the hall for supper, after supper they set the place for the qawali. The function finished in the early hours of the morning.
When we got home nobody could sleep, it was like our own get together. We all sat up and heard stories from the elders about their days growing up, school and working to earn a small salary.
My mum didn’t have it as bad as my uncles, apparently my grandfather didn’t allow my mum to work so after studying she sat at home and would help my granny with house chores.
My uncles had to make their own pocket money and had to help around the house as well as give my mum pocket money.
My dad’s family didn’t have it tough my grandfather had his own business so all my uncles worked in the shop and got a salary.
It just made me realize how grateful we have to be, we have the choice to work and not for our parents but for ourselves, some of us have it so easy.
I know there are people out there that have it difficult. We get so caught up in our own fantasy life that we forget to thank the Almighty for what we have.
We were going back home the next day after lunch, so we all got a few hours of sleep just before Fajr and a few after.
 ————————–
Thank you all for you patience in the last month, I did not post a lot and I do apologize for that. Will start posting more often from now.

PART THIRTHY THREE

PART THIRTHY THREE

The next morning I went to the office early so that I wouldn’t have to stay another day. I needed to get home and sort out my situation with my best friend.

I didn’t have time to reflect on what she did and my mum was very upset when I told her Zinat called her for the number because Asad wanted it.

Mr Khan was already at the office when I got there, we started working immediately and finished all our work before lunch.

Aunty Shenaaz invited me over for lunch before I got back home, she said she couldn’t let me go without a home cooked meal before my flight.

It was nice to be around the Khan family, they are very lovable people and always welcome you so warmly to their home.

Mr Khan dropped me off at the airport and waited until I boarded the plane, I got back home 2 hours later, I was too exhausted to speak or do nothing I went straight to my room and took a nap.

Everyone was so excited to have me back, my brothers especially they lost without me or should I say without the extra pocket money.

After supper I messaged Zinat to invite her for lunch. I needed to sort things out with her, it’s like she has become this inquisitive married Aunty that sits in the house the whole day and minds everyone else’s business.

Which is very annoying now because I thought our last conversation sorted everything out and she was not to interfere.

She agreed to come but made as if she was angry at me and I was the one who did wrong, typical of her.

Just before bed my mum came to my room to check on me nd speak to me about what Zinat did. Mum feels it’s not okay that she lied to get the number and although it’s a small issue it has to be known that she did wrong.

I called Asad when my mum left the room, he apologized for the way Zinat did things and said he didn’t ask her to get the number.

Apparently Asad and Muneer went to Zinat for supper one of the nights and she mentioned I was not around so he tried my cell and he couldn’t get through.

The next day she called my mum for the hotel number and messaged it to Asad. She has really gone too far, without anyone asking her to do anything she does what she feels like.

Anyways I’ll wait until tomorrow to see what she has to say.

The next morning I message Zinat to remind her about our meeting. She didn’t reply so I left it.

I got back to the office, sorted out some paper work and left before lunch,i had the afternoon off since I was away for a few days.

I went to the mall and did some shopping,I met Zinat at the restaurant for lunch. She didn’t look happy to see me.

Well I got us a table sat down and checked out the menu, the waiter came took our order and we waited, there was this awkwardness like she knew she did wrong and I didn’t want to be too harsh that I would hurt her feelings.

Anyways our food arrived as we begin to eat I brought up the topic, we had a brief discussion about what she did and about what my situation and agreement is with both the men.

She apologized and seemed to be happy that we spoke. She did mention that she was afraid that this would be our last time together.

Apparently Sameer told her not to interfere and that what she did was wrong and although we friend that doesn’t give her the right to meddle in my life.

We enjoyed the rest of our meal and spoke about my trip and about her daily life now that she is married, we caught up on our stories.

I’m glad I sorted things out, that’s the best thing about having a good friendship that we understand each other.

PART THIRTHY TWO

PART THIRTHY TWO

When I got back to the hotel the receptionist informed me that someone called for me, I thought it was my mum but it wasn’t. The receptionist took a number and it wasn’t one that I recognized.

I got to my room and called the number, it was Asad he got Zinat to call my mum and ask which hotel I was at and the room number, he got a new number so that’s why I didn’t recognize it.
I was a bit peeved at the fact that Zinat lied to my mum and was all in my business when I asked her not to be.

I ended the call with Asad and I messaged Zinat asking her to not interfere in my life and that I feel very strongly that if she continues she would be implying that we should not be friends anymore.

I was worn out from the days events so I decided to call it a night. The next morning Mr Khan called and said I didn’t need to come to the office very early he would only be in after lunch.

I took it easy and stayed in excited to relax in bed, I had breakfast in my room and watched tv most of the morning. Around 11am I got ready and went to the stores around the hotel just to get everyone gifts.

I went to the office straight after, Mr Khan was a bit late so I went through a few files and waited for him.

He finally arrived and brought lunch with him. I was glad that we got most of the work done. I asked him to please make our tomorrow’s meeting in the morning because I needed to get done I couldn’t stay another day away from my family.

He kept asking if everything was okay, as if I was walking around with I’m not okay my best friend is betraying me sign on my forehead.

Mr Khan was around for a couple of hours before he rushed to another meeting, so I continued with the rest of the work. Mr Khan told his PA to ask me to wait after work at the office for him.

He arrived literally two minutes before closing time I thought I was going to wait all alone.

I was confused why he asked me to wait when he closed the office. I asked several times but he refused to answer so I waited until he decided to talk.

He asked me too get into the car and he drove to a coffee shop a few streets away.

“So why are you so down today? Can’t be missing home so soon,”he said.
“No I’m not missing home, just something to do with my best friend,” I replied.
“Well I won’t get too personal and I will mind my business but just know I’m here if you need to talk, he said.

We sat and spoke for a while and then he got a call from his mum, she called to invite me to supper at their home.

I was really not up for it, I wanted to bury myself under the sheets and forget anyone or anything else existed.

I couldn’t refuse, Aunty Shenaaz is such a pleasant person and it would be rude, so I accepted. I went with Mr Khan from the coffee shop to their home.

I actually wanted to go back to the hotel and then go to them just before supper but he refused to listen to me.

Aunty Shenaaz made the most delicious butter chicken I have ever had, my mum is a excellent cook and I love her butter chicken but this was something else.

Aunty Shenaaz really went out of her way, she made a variety of dishes and the dessert was to die for. I usually don’t like tiramisu but this was lovely.

After supper we sat and spoke about family and towns, I mentioned that my family was down from Canada and we’re at our place and how I had to leave my mum alone and come, not intending to hint but Mr Khan did apologize and said he would be early the next morning.

We were having such a good time we didn’t realize how time went by I only got back to the hotel pass 11pm.

PART THIRTHY ONE

PART THIRTHY ONE

My client Mr Khan had his driver and personal assistant receive me from the airport. My boss had booked at a hotel for me but Mr Khan was not to happy about the hotel my boss chose so he had booked me into another hotel.

My boss was not to happy about this but I couldn’t refuse Mr Khan. I spent a few hours at the hotel unpacking and sorting out a few documents before my meeting with Mr Khan.
Mr Khan sent his driver to fetch me for our meeting. I worked for hours at his offices that I didn’t even realize that Mr Khan had left the office and lunch time had already past 2 hours ago.

I didn’t have time to get anything to eat so I had the snack bar that was in my bag. I haven’t spoken to my mum since the morning she must be stressing out at home and my brothers and my father must be getting all the frustration taken out on them.

Just after I had my snack Mr Khan comes back to the office and inquires if I had lunch and how far I am.

He was definitely not happy that his staff didn’t even check if I had lunch or if I needed anything. His PA had to hear a mouthful. I didn’t blame her she also had a lot to do.

I finished work at 4pm and went back to the hotel, when I arrived I asked the receptions to send me a cup of coffee, I really needed it.
As soon as I got to my room I went to shower, I needed to relax as much as I can as I had some bad news for my mum and good and bad news for my boss.

I didn’t realize how much work needed to be done and Mr Khan had a very tight schedule so when I need to discuss things with him he is never around so I need to stay 2 more days.

I called my boss first, he was happy work was getting done but was not happy that I had to be away for 2 more days especially since we had to attend a conference.

My mum went all hysterical on the phone blaming my boss and making sure I know she hates my boss for this.

Afterwards I got off the phone with my mum the receptionist calls and tells me I have a visitor.

I don’t know anyone in the town so I was a bit worried who it could be. It was Mr Khan he came over to invite me to supper with his family.

I was not up for company after the hectic day I had but he was in front of me and his family was waiting in the car.

So I asked him to give me a few minutes to get dressed, he asked his family to go ahead and we would join them there.

We got to the restaurant about 5 minutes after Mr Khan’s family so I didn’t feel so bad. It was his parents and his two sisters. His mum was very nice although she asked a lot of personal questions, his dad was fairly quiet while his sisters spoke a lot.

His father is retired and his mum has always been a housewife it’s what she enjoys the most although I hear they have servants for everything.

His sisters are both younger then him one is studying to be a dietitian and the other is in grade 12.

After supper Mr Khan’s mum Aunty Shenaaz invited me over to their home which was a street away from my hotel, although I was tired I had no excuse as she said “you not far from us and my son will drop you off.”

I was stunned when we got to their home. It was big but simple, they built it to their needs and didn’t go out to impress according to their status and being their accountant I know exactly how rich they are.

I felt so welcomed in their home, I must add that they do not have servants for everything, just shows you not to believe everything people tell you especially if it’s tails about others.

Aunty Shenaaz did her own cooking and baking, she even shopped herself for groceries and all that’s needed around the house, they girls have to clean up after themselves although they do have a full time domestic.

The domestic is only allowed to clean the floors, wash the laundry, iron and do the dishes and she helps Aunty Shenaaz with kitchen chores.

I was glad to see such humble people existed, they had so much money but never boasted about it. It was a lovely evening and I enjoyed the company.

PART THIRTHY

PART THIRTHY

Today my cousins and I planned a girl day of shopping. We went to every shop possible in town and at the mall. It was exhausting but it was a lot of fun. At least I wasn’t shopping alone.

We had late lunch at Jimmy’s and thereafter decided to go watch a movie. I haven’t been to the movies in such a long time.

I hate going alone, I usually go with Zinat but she was always busy with wedding preparations and I didn’t want to disturb her so I never went to watch a movie.

It was quite late by the time the movie ended and so we drove back home. We were still so full from all the Divine food we had at Jimmy’s that we skipped supper.

The next day we all were going for a picnic at the lake so all the ladies got together after supper and prepared the snacks.

After the exhausting day we had it was not something we enjoyed doing but the rest of the ladies enjoyed making snacks and just being together especially my mum and my aunties.

I went straight to bed after, I was dead tired and we had an early morning and a long day ahead.

The next morning we all got ready and met at the lake. My uncle wasn’t so keen on going for a picnic and I don’t blame him, it’s tiring for the elders of the family.

My granny usually just comes for a couple of hours and then she goes home so my uncle said he would join her.

The lake is actually a resort you can stay over night or just come for the day, the locals enjoyed the day visits more.

The kids were really enjoying themselves with boat rides, water slides, pony rides, putt putt and so many more things.

The adults also had their fair share of fun, the guys all decided to play volley ball while the ladies cheered them on.

We were the most noisiest crowd there but we were not bothered, we even called others to come join in on the fun.

“We definitely left people talking about us, “one of my Aunts said. Everyone just gave her ‘the look’ and carried on.

I got a call from my boss to inform me that I had a flight 6am in the morning to meet a client. My mum was not going to be too happy about this.

She hates me going out of town but it’s work and it’s my account so I can’t really say no. I told my boss I would be there and he assured me the driver would pick me up and have my ticket with him.

Now I had to tell my mum, I finally managed to tell her like a by the way I have a flight tomorrow. She was not happy at all.

Well it’s one of those things I knew what I was signing on when I took the job. I’ve been in this company for six years now and I’ve been on many overnight trips and even day trips to other cities but still my mum complains.

I guess it’s because she worries about me, a mother always looks out for her children and that’s what my mum was doing

We left the resort around 5pm and all went to our house, my mum told everyone to come for supper by us.

As soon as we got home my uncles wanted tea so all the young ladies made tea for them.

I went up to my room to pack a overnight bag and got all my work files in order, I called my boss to have some files sent home so I could work on them for the client I was seeing the next day.

I didn’t sit too much with the family, I knew I had a lot of work to do and all needed to be done before I board the plane.

After supper I went back to my room to finish the rest of my work, I had a few minutes before I went to bed so I spent it with my Gorapapa.

We spoke about work, how he thinks I should live my life. I agree with him to an extent although I don’t think I should rush into marriage now.

He suggested I choose one of the guys that are interested in me now so that means between Ridhwaan and Asad.
